we moved!

just next door though.

both two bedroom apartments in our building have been open for the past few weeks, so joe & i visited the open houses & have been vaguely considering that it might be nice for him to have a home office/bike room. the kitchen is smaller, true. but the bedroom is darker & the neighbors that smoke/hack up a lung are on the opposite side of the building. so sunday afternoon i called to see if our landlord would even consider letting us out of our lease. by 9pm we had 3/4 of our stuff & both cats in the new place! our new apartment number is #102. right now there’s nothing in the kitchen cabinets, so you know where motorboat is….

motorboat’s diet, merle, and the new new job

this week in seattle…
i started my new job. its so awesome! and daunting. i can do anything i want to do, within the scope of the lab. which is a lot more freedom to investigate things that interest me than i had in the past. but also, its all incumbent upon me to pick interesting questions with the potential for growth. its been very exciting to delve into a completely new area of immunolgy, but talk about feeling behind the 8 ball! its like i’m a first year grad student all over again. i feel really slow. but all my lab mates are helping me catch up. and my new boss (also named mike) has suggested one preliminary experiment that suits something i already know how to do. so that should give me a place to start.

also, joe release merle, his erlang memcached client. memcached is is a useful way to speed up applications & web servers because it retains lists of things in the RAM memory of a computer, instead of putting them on the hard drive. his program interfaces with memcached in erlang (a new computer language). seems like people are excited about it. joe is excited that it works!

and motorboat went on a diet. he’s fat and he loves to eat. so this diet thing is actually kind of difficult, considering mira’s proclivity to graze all day. anything she leaves behind he vacuums up like a pig. so we have to put down breakfast & dinner separately, and now he gets locked in the bathroom for meal times. poor big football-shaped duder-cat.

finally, we’ve been watching “the elegant universe” all about the history of physics & development of string theory. cause working on open source elang & immune complex-mediated antigen presentation projects doesn’t make us big enough dorks.

Snowed in SLC

Woke up this am to 6″ of snow & forbidding forecasts along our route from Salt Lake City to Boise, so we decided to extend our stop over at Hotel Monaco & check out the town. We hoofed it all around & had a little difficulty finding things open to the public on Sunday, but successfully stopped by the Mormon Temple, Beehive Tea Room, & the SLC library. Nifty was to spend a bright, snowy day!

Mishaps.

you ain’t joking! getting to the end of the isle was a bit more of an ordeal than i anticipated due to an early am car crash, missing makeup, & a forgotten veil. lori & maggie & mom, i couldn’t have done it without you. but it all turned out really great in the end, even the rastafar-i alleluia! joe loved his lemon cupcakes & vegetarian buffet. plus all arms of my family were there & they spoke! and friends i haven’t seen in forever came. then we stayed in the spookiest little farm house till our midnight flight to carbondale. it wasn’t my idea to put a headless mannequin wearing a wedding dress on the upstairs landing looking at itself in a mirror! the next am, it wasn’t so scary- just too darn quiet. but now the rented ties and cupcake stand have been returned, and the mover is coming tomorrow at 8am. hope we’re ready for everything that’s next! cross your fingers.
